12-word recovery phrase
Recreates the original local identity and private keys. It must remain secret, offline, and in the correct order.
Prepare before you need it
The 12-word recovery phrase restores your identity. A current encrypted backup restores supported local records. Keep both ready before changing devices.

Restores supported contact, group, and broadcast-list records. It is encrypted and depends on the correct recovery material.
The phrase recreates the original identity keys. Contact, group, broadcast-list, setting, and local relationship records are carried by the encrypted backup.
The encrypted backup works together with the recovery phrase to restore the intended identity and supported local records.
Restored contacts and group or broadcast-list members return as Pending, ready for fresh verification before exchanging new protected content.
Offline storage is recommended. Write the recovery phrase down and store it securely offline. In build 71, the standard iOS Copy action on the displayed phrase can place it on the system clipboard.
Create your vault, protect your recovery phrase, and keep an encrypted backup current.
